Profile

Since the first of February 1991, I have been employed by the Ministry of Health as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with the biggest hospital in Mauritius, with 625 beds, where I am in charge of both the Burns Unit and the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department.

The Burns Unit consists of both a female and male ward, with a 25-bed capacity each and 5 Beds in Intensive Care Unit Burns. The Plastic Surgery Department shares the beds of two male and two female wards with the Orthopaedic Department.

There was also a constant increase in the number of plastic surgery cases treated by me during the past thirty years, and some of the pathologies treated by me, are the following:

  • Hand surgery such as tendons, nerves, blood vessels repairs, fractures as well as amputations, degloving injuries
  • Polytraumas with extensive tissue loss
  • Breast surgery
  • Post-burn reconstructive surgery such as contractures, keloids, etc
  • Cervico-facial surgery, excisions of tumours and reconstructive surgery
  • Orbital surgery after facial trauma
  • Skin tumours, such as melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, etc
  • Microsurgery
  • Reconstructive surgeries by flaps and tissue-expanders
  • Cranio-facial surgery
  • Congenital malformations like hypospadias

During the past twenty years, I have been improving substantially the surgical care and medical treatment at the Burns Unit and consequently, I have been able to bring down the mortality rate over the successive years, although, there has been a constant rise in the number of admissions at the same time.

Furthermore, I am involved in:

  • Teaching sessions for young doctors, nursing staff, nursing students, Red Cross, other governmental and non-governmental organisations
  • Setting-up of a high-standard Maxillo cranio-facial head & neck surgery unit in Mauritius
  • Seminars and conferences
  • Regular talks on the local radio and television stations
  • Exchange of opinions and techniques with visiting professors

Since 1993, I have been appointed as Advisor to the Ministry of Health. I have been in charge of the planning and surveillance of the construction of a new Burns Unit at the Victoria Hospital, comprising a five bed ICU, specialised reanimation rooms, operation theatre, recovery room, sterilising unit, etc.
